HEATH CONSTRUCTION BUILDING CITY’S ‘GREEN’ LIBRARY: CONSTRUCTION COSTS TOTAL $1.6 MILLION

Heath Construction building first LEED library for City of Fort Collins

Fort Collins, Colo., January 8, 2009 – Heath Construction (www.heathconstruction.com) is building Fort Collins’ third branch library – a 17,500-square-foot facility that will be the city’s first LEED-certified library.

Library officials estimate the final cost for Council Tree Library, including materials, furnishings and cost of the building core, will be $6.6 million. Heath’s construction costs total $1.6 million.

The new library branch, scheduled for completion in early 2009, is designed to meet or exceed the city’s goal for a LEED Gold Certified library facility.

Working with the City of Fort Collins, the Heath team is building the high-performance Council Tree Library with energy-efficient products and certified green-building materials, in order to reduce operating and maintenance costs and minimize environmental impact.

“Environmentally sustainable construction is a part of Heath’s culture,” said Randy DeMario, Heath president. “LEED certification is fast becoming a must-have requirement for many of today’s municipal projects.”

In the last decade, Heath has built nearly 100 municipal, school and educational facilities throughout the region, including the award-winning $3.4 million Harmony Library in Fort Collins, the $4.6 million Lafayette police facility, $7.6 million Loveland Fairgrounds Park and numerous multi-million-dollar projects at Colorado State University.

Working with the City of Fort Collins to meet or exceed its LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification goal, the Heath team is implementing strict building requirements developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.  For example,Heath is constructing the new library to earn LEED credits in such categories as:

o  water efficiency;
o  energy and atmosphere;
o  materials and resources;
o  indoor environmental quality; and
o  innovation and design process.

The Council Tree branch library is likely to receive LEED Platinum certification – the highest level awarded – because the Fort Collins Regional Library District staff is selecting eco-conscious furnishings and equipment for the completed facility.

The new branch library is taking shape on the second floor of a retail building located in Front Range Village shopping center on the northwest corner of Ziegler and Harmony Roads. It will include a large meeting room, several study rooms, and an open floor plan designed to accommodate changing needs of the family-oriented facility.
