Fort Collins, Colo., November 27, 2007 - In just two weeks in October, leading industry groups awarded Heath Construction five honors for recent mountain projects: a 750-acre Girl Scout camp near Red Feather Lakes and a riverside plaza/riverwalk in Estes Park, Colo.
For both projects, Heath overcame Mother Nature's hurdles - including huge snowstorms, gale-force winds and frigid temperatures - to complete the projects on time and under budget.
Magic Sky Ranch, built for the Girl Scouts - Mile Hi Council in rugged mountains near Red Feather Lakes last fall and winter, was named "Project of the Year: $5 million - $15 million" by the Associated General Contractors of Colorado. The project also received a Silver Hard Hat Award from Colorado Construction magazine.
The $8.2 million project involved building a 10,000-square-foot dining hall with 60-foot vaulted ceilings, an 8,000-square foot activities center, 10 cabins, a large equestrian center and miles of walking paths. The camp's secluded location and access only by remote dirt roads created challenges when such materials as 70-foot-long trusses or mixed cement that hardened in a few hours were hauled from Front Range locations.
For the $1.9 million Estes Park project, Heath replaced crumbling retaining walls along Fall River though downtown and created the beautiful Wiest Plaza/Riverwalk.
The Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects awarded Heath the President's Award of Excellence and a Land Steward Designation award for the complex project. The Associated General Contractors of Colorado presented Heath an ACE Award of Merit in the category "Meeting the Challenge of a Difficult Job."
The three awards Heath received for the Estes Park project acknowledge the construction team's hard work re-routing the river to allow construction of the 20-foot-tall retaining wall, filtering water to reduce sediments that could harm fish, and communicating constantly with local shop owners to minimize the impact on local business.
