“On my jobsite, we’re meeting a higher standard.”
July 12, 2011
I learned many years ago that you can’t define quality on a jobsite with a blueprint. Despite all the detail in a set of construction drawings, you won’t find anything there that spells out the difference between getting the job done – meeting the spec – and doing the job the way it really should be done. The difference between average work and top quality work is easy to see, but it’s hard to explain. A chipped piece of tile. A joint that isn’t quite tight. A door hung with a reveal of 1/16” on one side and 3/16” on the other… Anyone can make a mistake. But a true building professional is never satisfied until the job is done right. Why do mistakes like these occur? Sometimes they’re the result of a lack of skill. But more often it’s the result of a lack of heart. Even a highly skilled craftsman will produce only mediocre work if he doesn’t come to the job with the right attitude. On the other hand, when you walk onto a jobsite focused on your customer’s best interests instead of your own, quality comes naturally. That’s why, as a Heath project manager, getting this principle across to everyone on my jobsite is the most important part of my job.
