Another discovery – “garden level” windows!

November 11, 2011

These long-forgotten windows in the basement of Beau Jo’s suggest that the building originally included “garden level” window wells that must have brought a lot of light into the basement.

Andy Carlson, the jobsite superintendent for historic preservation specialists Wattle & Daub, investigated reports of old windows in the basement of Beau Jo’s Pizza.  This photo shows you what he found – windows at “garden level” that were probably surrounded by window wells on the sidewalk in the original building.

Andy had actually been searching for old window materials that might be repurposed to rebuild the transom windows on College Avenue.  But this discovery was probably just as significant.  The framing around this window suggests that our framing style for the transom windows on College is historically accurate.
