College Avenue transom windows fully restored!

January 24, 2012

With storefronts rebuilt, and with all the overhead transom windows now installed, you can really begin to see how the Avery Building must have looked more than 100 years ago – stylish and welcoming.

Note the more-vertical transom over the stairway in the foreground (see photo).  Compared with the lineup of windows to the left, heading north, they provide contrast and visual interest.

Note, too, the exposed brick above the transom windows and below the arched second-floor windows.  That’s where the building’s new cornice will be installed.

This horizontal line of transom windows above the storefronts was a popular architectural expression at the start of the early 20th century.  After decades hidden behind painted sheet metal, and with lost windows replaced, the transom windows of the Avery Building are once again available to admire!
