Surety: From Ancient Mesopotamia to the USASurety has been an effective and accepted business tool for at least 4,700 years. According to an agreement etched into a clay tablet in Mesopotamia, a merchant acted as a surety and guaranteed the work of a local farmer who had contracted to tend the fields of another who had been drafted into the service of the king. Surety was later included in the written legal codes of ancient Babylon in 670 BC, the Roman Empire in 150 AD…and the United States of America in 1894.
Since the ancient days of Mesopotamia, we certainly have advanced – from clay tablets to digital surety documents! But the essential concept remains the same, and surety remains a vitally important tool for conducting business. | Rusty Lear VP & Director of Surety Flood & Peterson Ins. |
