Clues to old storefronts and doorways long forgotten.

October 25, 2011

Mysterious brick discovered beneath 'original' display window walls.

Each week the detective work continues.  Yesterday we dismantled the knee wall that supports the display windows of Dean’s Barber Shop.  Beneath the wall, we found old brick alongside the concrete sidewalk!  That’s a sign that perhaps the current layout of windows and doors had been altered over the years.  Does this brick mark the location of another entrance, installed in the 1920s or 1930s and later eliminated?  We may never know.

Framing for the knee walls is now nearly finished.

We’re rebuilding the knee walls in all the stores facing College Avenue.  Today, we’re nearly finished framing the new wall in Dean’s Barber Shop.  We don’t believe all the knee walls in the building are original, though they are certainly historic.  The one exception may be the knee wall in the Sante Fe Craftsman store.  Stop by, and you’ll notice that its height is a little different than the others.  We’re preserving that height – despite its inconsistency with the other stores – in order to preserve the beautiful, original display shelving just inside the store.
