New sandstone sills reverse the erosion caused by 114 years of Colorado weather.

October 31, 2011

The eroding action of wind, rain, snow and ice is relentless.  By patching the sandstone sills in Avery Block Building we will strengthen the appearance of the building and enhance its ability to shed water – which will help to preserve the building for many years to come.

The prominent, horizontal sandstone sill beneath these windows is both decorative and practical.  This sill has just been restored to present the building as Montezuma Fuller envisioned it – and also to renew the building’s resistance to water, snow and ice.

Look to the left of this craftsman at work, and you can see the contrast between the new sill component he is installing and an old sill component to the left.  This is what 114 years of Colorado wind, rain, snow and ice can do to sandstone!

Each sill is comprised of a number of sandstone components like this one.  Once they are set in place, they will renew the building’s resistance to our harsh Colorado weather.
